Dia de Independencia (Mexico)

Hey guys! So once again so sorry for the very general email last week. It was my first P-Day in the field so I was still learning the ropes. And yes, my P-Day is on Monday. This week it was changed because of Mexican Independence Day 1 was on Sunday night, and Day 2 was even more dangerous because of the after parties and parades. So we had to be in our houses at 6pm both days.

Independence Days were lit and were filled with food, fireworks, drunk people, etc. Gotta love Mexico. Lots of Pan dulce and tacos. Safe to say I was in heaven.

Speaking of food. One thing different here is that we eat lunch with members not dinner. Because lunch is the biggest meal here during siesta 1-5 when when we can't contact anyone. The food here is amazing. We use tortillas as utensils and I have no idea why but the "Coca" (Coca-Cola) is soooooo much better here and very popular. My favorite food here has been either Cemitas or Tacos Arabes. This week I ate conejo (rabbit) for the first time. Yum haha. Also on Saturday we were supposed to go the a members house but an RM told us she gives raw Turkey heads. Gobbler, eyes  and all. So we made up an excuse and went to McDonald's instead. Hit the spot I haven't had anything American in almost 2 months haha.

About half my zone on Saturday night got the same email. That somehow BYU has beat USC. A lot of the American Elders here were "partying", drinking coca eating oreos, and pathetic attempts at Méxican yells while In the church parking lot.

This week was fun, but also filled with work. I had my first chance to plan on my own. I felt impressed that we needed to spend the whole day contacting. For the first hour and a half we walked about 4 miles up into the hills to an area I had prayed about and picked it start contacting.

We started knocking doors and talking to people and about 30 minutes later I saw a kids playing in the field with about 4 adults. I felt prompted me that they were ready to learn about the gospel. I told my comp that the spirit had prompted me that we needed to talk to them and he said "igualmente" and agreed. We shared with them the Plan of Salvation or the Plan of Happiness. The spirit was obviously there and the family was prepared to accept and listen to our message. They all agreed to read the BOM. I cannot testify enough of the power of the Holy Ghost. He is our guide and testify of truth. In Proverbs 3:5-6 it reads...

5  Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

I have found that we simply need to trust in the Lord and in the Holy Ghost. Follow promptings and you will be blessed. We simply need to act in faith and hope.

Thank you for all your prayers and emails. You all mean a lot to me and I love you all. I am absolutely loving the field and the work. My Spanish has grown sooo much this past week and my companion says by the end of my training he thinks I'll be fluent. For this I am very grateful for my former companion, all my teachers, and especially to the Lord.

Work hard, love your companion, love the people, and love the work and I promise you the lord will provide the rest.

Once again God bless you all and I am praying for all of you.

Love,
Elder Sandberg
